 PREP To prepare for tomorrow's practical work of filming an opening sequence, please watch the following two title sequences which are filmed in in a similar 'table top' style.

• what titles and credits appear on screen? The titles and credits that appear are of the various people behind the scenes that work on the movie and not just the actors.

• how is the film's genre conveyed?  The film Genre is conveyed by the lighting and the props on the table it is also showed by the non diegetic sounds such as the music and the screams.
• what use is made of sound? They use sound to convey to convey the genre and theme of the film to the audience.
• what hooks the audience and makes us want to carry on watching The Music is gradually increasing and growing the anticipation and eagerness for the film to begin.

There are some key actors that play main characters or other important characters and important people in the production of the movie e.g. the producer the director not just the key actors. The film genres are conveyed through the items that are placed across the table top and the music that sets the tone of what the genre could potentially be. For example music with dramatic high pitched sounds and a fast tempo could demonstrate the horror film because the sounds are unwelcoming and menacing. As they continue to pan the camera across the table top there was a building of the story line where the viewer was starting to see a plot idea coming together which drew them in to watching the rest of the show.

• Who do we start to empathise with?

At the very beginning of the episode we are already beginning to empathise with the police because Ryan is called to a local disturbance on the beach He does Everything that he can and he still is mistreated by the naturists on the beach. When they get their next call we begin to feel sorry for Jake because he is the new recruit on his first callout and he already has to deal with a difficult situation of a heroin addict which he then has to treat. In every situation in the episode we feel sorry for the police because each time they do their best to protect people but they still get abuse when thing go wrong and are accused of doing the wrong thing. This is why the critics believed that this show was in too much favour of the police because every time the police where being abused for doing nothing wrong.

Yr 10 Monday Avengers: SOUND

PREP Watch the first 10 minutes (after the title sequence is over) of The Avengers on Clickview. Analyse how sound is used in the extract to create meaning. You can use any part of the opening scenes - both the opening scene at the seaside at Little Bazeley or the scene in Emma Peel's flat

• first identify an example - use terminology such as diegetic sound, non-diegetic sound, dialogue.
• then give the example - " Little Bazeley is constructed as a seaside village through realistic sound codes such as..."
• "One example of how sound is used is when Steed makes conversation with Emma Peel..."
• then explain what meaning is created - "In the exchange of dialogue between the fisherman and the undercover agent who arrives from the sea they talk about...... which creates suspicion and comedy because....."
• "Steed's dialogue reveals his accent and shows that he is..." "What Steed says to Emma Peel suggests that he feels in charge because...." /  "Emma's comment about the coffee and cream show that..." / "Emma's throwaway comment about having just finished a scientific article shows that..."

 At the beginning of the film you can hear the diegetic sound of the waves to crating a relaxing typical beach scene. But your can hear some non diegetic and threatening music as the spy emerges from the water. The suspense then continues as the man is given directed then the music and theme tune begins to play which emphasises what the character look like and where they are because later on in the episode we see the same characters. 

When Steed entered the apartment their was romantic music playing to suggest to the viewer that even though they are colleagues there is still some romance. When they begin fencing you can hear the sound of the iron rods hitting each other with some dramatic music to add suspense to the duel.
